Software Estimates and the Illusion of Control
We've been lying to ourselves since the very beginning of software development: pretending we can predict when a project will be done. But we get it wrong more often than not. Maybe it isn't really accuracy that businesses are looking for. Maybe estimates exist for the sole purpose of risk aversion. It's time we stop estimating and start managing risk instead.
